Bruce Dittmar began his Army career when he joined the CMF in 1947. When he finished his civilian apprenticeship he spent twelve months touring Australia and returned to Adelaide to join the Permanent Forces and served in Korea in 1951/52. He gained the rank of WO 2 in 1957. He served in Papua New Guinea as WO in charge of Workshops. He became a WOI ten years after enlistment, and was commissioned in 1964.
After serving in Vietnam, he spent a further three years in the Army at Bandiana and retired in 1973.
He continued to work in a civilian capacity, mainly in the field of pumping and irrigation, and for 15 years lived on the banks of the River Murray in the township of Corowa, where he served as a member of Albury Legacy for 20 years, and became a Life Member of the RSL.
Bruce has recently retired to live in Canberra with his wife, Judith. He has one son, one daughter and six grandchildren.
